György Árvai, set designer, experimental theatre director, musician, was born in 1959 in Budapest. He studied set and costume design at the College of Fine Arts, and graduated in 1988. Afterwards he designed the scenery of productions at many different theatres both in the capitol and in the countryside, and of films as well. In 1984 he founded his alternative theatre group, the Collective of Natural Disasters.
The productions of the Collective of Natural Disasters are typically a genesis of the arts: theatre, dance, fine and applied arts and musical effects are all brought together in their work. As per their poetics, they won’t be giving answers, but will ask their questions through this unqiue theatrical language, prompting the audience to free-associate.
The Death-Tours trilogy, which has subtitle of The Cooperation of the End, is a theatrical trip spanning three and a half hours. The series of performances consists of three episodes: 62 Days had its debut in 2002, Angel Stock in 2004 and Pre-Actio in 2006. The trilogy will be performed in one night as a part of the Contemporary Drama Festival, and its main goal is to depict death’s extremities; extremities that affect everyone.
“Árvai doesn’t preach. He tells and depicts. Guides us on our way. But at the same time, he keeps his distance. He doesn’t want to interpret or explain anyone or anything. Least of all excuse anything. But he does have enough of his own up front views, and a need for theatrical expression, to be a no-nonsense maker of documentaries. After all, this is theatre. The unsuspecting audience is lured into a valley of moralizing… The director’s goal is to force them into a battle within, to make them fight with themselves, for days or even weeks. The basis of the Collective of Natural Disasters’ theatre is: disturbing the individual theatre-goers’ ego. A big slap to their stereotypical beliefs. Provocation itself.” (Csaba Králl about the Pre-Actio, Balkon)
