I, the Victim. by the author and performer Simona Semenič is a show about a young woman who has lived through an incredibly broad collection of illnesses. Based on her own experience with ailments that are either socially taboo or at least carry a stigma, Simona Semenič mercilessly tears down the victim stereotype in an amusing yet bittersweet manner. The solo performance I, the Victim. Premiered at the 13th International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women (Ljubljana, 2007).
when i have herpes today
nobody even bothers to ask if i'm in pain
it's there on my ass
itching
hurting a bit
but most of all getting on my nerves
if it gets too bad
i go to the hospital for a couple of days
but now i'd rather not go
so that sick old ladies won't tell me that i can't endure
i'd rather endure
wear it on my ass
and keep smiling at meetings
i decided
that from now on
my herpes
will be just mine
and perhaps of some sexual partner
for better or for worse as they say

something nice in all of this too …)
Simona Semenic has established her reputation as one of the most promising emerging playwrights in her native Slovenia. Her first production, Fistful of Empty Hands (2001) has been hailed by the national press as "the stunning gift of pure and unpretentious beauty" as well as "the most promising debut of the upcoming generation of theatre artists." She has been an international associate of WaxFactory's since 2003.
