A scandal? Contemporary Shakespeare? Staged for the first time, György Spiró’s play is based on events in Hungarian history, painting a shocking, brutal and unsettling picture of the nature of power, of paranoia, of personality unloved and thus shattered. A picture both grotesque and lyrical, entertaining and philosophical, about freedom of choice and act in a chaotic world controlled by politics. Can man see with their eyes, or does man need to be blinded temporarily or permanently to be able to see at all? A blending of the merriment of a carnival, of obscene brutality, and of philosophy of history that mesmerizes the audience with its poetry and frivolity.
„This world of the Middle Ages is disillusioned and cruel. The king cannot act, caught in a web of treachery, espionage, conspiracy and political intrigue, held in the sway of blind fate and circumstance. Spiró depicts his grand characters with deep scepticism, realism, all with an air of historical irony. Despite the play’s bloody showdowns, its brutality, its cruelty… It still retains some sort of cheer: the irony stemming from the realisation of necessity, and the joy of getting to know the inner workings of these characters.” (Dezső Kovács, Kritika)
