I have collected compositions titled "When I grow up" written by children between 6 and 16 from different schools and districts of Budapest. I was curious if it is possible to create entertaining theater using these documents while we can talk about what really happens when we grow up.
(Pelsőczy Réka – director)
Nine people are sitting in front of us. Men and women between 30 and 40. Hungarians or at least they seem to be. They wear their best clothes. Their feet are dug in sand. They turn their face towards the sky. They are sunbathing.
An imaginary group therapy begins where we get to know who they are: their name, qualification, martial status, where have they attended the elementary school and kindergarten, what did they wear at carnivals in their childhood.
Their memories recall the nursery rhymes, songs and plays of the 80’s and also their dreams and problems in different ways – through music, monologues, dances or choruses.
The performance is exclusively based on original documents – compositions of children, present-day advertisements and personal collections.
„The joy and the ardour with which the performance has been created are almost palpable. Original texts have been used which were written by children. Grown-ups tell us children’s thoughts and dreams about life. It is obvious how old are they but their childish gestures and intonations are in strange contradiction with their age. On the other hand the imaginations of the kids totally reflect the dreams of adults, which are pretty often clichés or unreal phantasmagorias. A distorting mirror of the world we live. The audience who were close-fighting for the seats are laughing in almost continuously but sometimes their heart sink.”
Bóta Gábor
The performance is a co-production of Kék Művészügynökség and Művészetek Völgye.
