The Chowaniec-play was part of the CDF's Staged Reading Programme last year. The company and the director, spurred on by praise from critics and the audience, have decided to stage the play in Thália Theatre, with the Theatre’s support.

Elżbieta Chowaniec (born 1982 in Kraków) is one of the most successful contemporary Polish playwrights today. She studied film and television, journalism and screenwriting. Later she continued her studies at the Drama Laboratory in Warsaw, led by Tadeusz Słobodzianek. Since its debut, Gardenia, her first play, is one of the most successful plays on the Drama Laboratory’s repertoire.
Pelsőczy Réka was born in 1973 in Budapest. She received her degree in acting in 1998 as a member of Zsámbéki Gábor’s class at the University Of Theatre and Film in Budapest. She works as director, actor and photographer. She has received several Vastaps Prizes and special prizes for her work as actress and director. Presently she is a member of the Katona József Theatre troupe.
How do inherited traits and learned patterns of behaviour influence our behaviour? Can we separate ourselves from the circumstances of society? Can we free ourselves from our family traditions and conditioning?
With biting irony and feminine humour, Gardenia attempts to deal with past and recent events by showing us the lives of everyday women. The drama of four women, of four generations living through the Twentieth Century, fighting for survival and searching for happiness. Though their stories differ, their fates are very similar: dealing with “inherited” family problems from generation to generation, without support, while being buried in their work and trying to find solace in alcohol. The future is in the hand of the youngest woman, who could break this “life model”. But will she be able to start a new life with such an “inheritance”?
